Welt Am Sonntag Icon: No Miracle!

“The holy grail of cosmetics? Maybe.”

His name is on it, his wisdom is in it: for the eponymous skin care, Augustinus Bader, world leading researcher on the field of regenerative medicine, only uses the wisdom of nature – he assures Susanne Opalka.
First, he rearranges the furniture. “Whenever I travel, there is something different when I come back” Augustinus Bader smiles. A big, decorative chair with velvet-upholstering is banned into a corner of the room, while he prefers to sit on the green Swiss ball which has a slightly faded green colour: “It is better for the back”. But now he places us at the large meeting table in the study of his private institute, which is based on the ground floor of a Gründerzeit villa in Parthenstein, a district of Klinga, about 30 kilometres southeast of Leipzig. Here, the experts for regenerative medicine researches and lives with his wife Susanne, a physician as well. The family also includes four children. The offices and administration of his private research and of a foundation are housed here as well. Cornelia Wollmann who takes care of the guests serves a homemade smoothie. The space is filled with energy and tension. This may partly be caused by the painting of a Tibetan artist, which Augustinus Bader brought from a lecture tour and which shows three imposing yaks storming towards the viewer with blowing manes.
With a soft voice but fast pace, the professor describes his journey into the world of cosmetics. Since 2003 the Augsburg born director and professor at the Institute for Applied Stem Cell Biology and Cell Techniques at the University of Leipzig has been considered one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of biomedicine. Bader holds more than 200 patents for key technologies and is specialist in pharmacology and toxicology and discovered a fundamental mechanism of wound healing. “I can describe a principle”, he expresses it. The 58-year-old works with clinics, doctors and researchers all over the world to prove in studies that his explanation of the healing mechanism and the resulting treatment method work. Hundreds of successes with patients (for example with severe burns, big chronic wounds or ulcers) are already documented. 2009, after ten years of research, he went public with it and was promptly discredited as a miracle healer. Something that hit him very hard - as a person and as a researcher - and that left a damage that is still noticeable today. “I do not do anything else but to innate the regeneration processes of the body and to activate it and coordinate it.
And now cosmetics? “I really had to be persuaded,” he says without coquetry. There was more needed that two entertaining work dinners with the French investor Charles Rosier. 2013 the two of them met for the first time.
Persistent by profession – Bader is a pure researcher in the first place – it took about two years till he agreed. Bader adapted the technology of his medical "Skin Wound Therapy" for skin care and an anti-aging formula. He had secretly experimented with the formula in his private institute. “It worked remarkably.” And this is how: Everything our body does is the result of innate communication processes. The trillions of our body cells know what they have to do, is innate in them. Apart from a genetic disposition, there are basically only two situations that can override this process: a trauma, a wound for example or a deep injury and the aging process "Both change the communication and the signals become more rare or are not send at all.” To say it very simply: Bader’s medical treatment tricks the body and it is told that the wound is not that big and it sends him the message, among other ways via cytokines: do not panic, stem calls! You will make the repair. For the cream, the mechanism is similar: “In principle, we only use the innate wisdom of the body and its evolutionary knowledge of healing and regeneration. And we bring him or the stem cells the substances in the microenvironment which they need to produce optimal conditions. The cells feel good again, all signals are send and heard and they can do what their vocation is.: regeneration and repair.”
Since the beginning of March “The Cream” (for normal to oily) and “The Rich Cream” (for dry skin) are available. They are supposed to be able to minimize the signs of aging and to significantly improve the skin quality; to balance the skin tone and to refine the structure. A key to the amazing properties of both creams (they only differ in the lipid content) is the trigger factor complex called TFC8. It contains amino acids, valuable vitamins, peptides and synthesized molecules that also occur in the skin.“ About 40 ingredients of the highest cosmetically value are included in exactly the right amount and concentration. We know what the cells need to work optimally. If they miss something or have too much of something, it does not work,” explains the expert. Of course, this cream is a beauty story. There are no promises of salvation associated with it. The prestigious scientist was finally convinced by this: “We apply our know-how and our knowledge about the principle we discovered to cosmetics, also to finance our research and so that our foundation can fulfil its mission.” Bader has worked to make his healing methods accessible to those who need it the most. He had discovered a basic mechanism or is rather able to describe it. There have been a lot of studies on it now, “But it will never be over. What you could make of this is so enormously big. I only limit myself to the skin now”, he becomes unusually euphoric. And quickly quotes St. Augustine:“Only someone who cannot explain nature believes in miracles.” The scientist Augustinus Bader has found a way to explain nature. “And thus, it is not a miracle.”
